Last week, we made significant progress at the Nor

Last week, we made significant progress at the North Indio Regional Flood Control project in Indio, CA. Most notable was the reopening of the busy intersection at Jefferson Street and Avenue 40. A detour had been in place at this location for 10 months to allow our crews to complete a massive 1,600-foot-long reinforced concrete box culvert that now channels stormwater below these critical streets.

We also recently completed constructing a shorter reinforced concrete box culvert, 120 feet in length, that runs under Avenue 38. With the backfill and asphalt paving also completed at this location, we were able to reopen Avenue 38 to traffic on April 8.

Additionally, we have made notable progress on the construction of the reinforced concrete box culvert that will carry water under Adams Street at the northern end of the project. The invert for this structure was recently placed in two pours of about 800 cubic yards each. When completed, this box will be 261 feet long and consist of six separate cells, each measuring 10 feet in height and 20 feet in width.

We are excited to share the news of the Appaloosa Solar I project being named "2023 Energy Project of the Year" by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America, Utah Chapter. Beginning in 2022, our team worked on this 200 MWac solar project to perform the mechanical and module construction for Sundt Renewables. We installed over 60,000 piles, 5,500 rows of the Nextracker racking system, and 444,000 solar panels throughout the site. Calling on the next generation! Earlier this year, our field engineer, Lohgan Spencer, presented in front of two groups of students at Bonsall High School in San Diego County. The 35-minute presentations served as a window into potential future careers, allowing students to learn about how Lohgan joined the construction industry, his education, why he became part of Sukut, the industry overall, and two projects that Lohgan is involved in. The kids were very engaged and asked meaningful questions. Some even approached Lohgan later to see how they could get started in the industry.

Our team has completed the installation and testing of four Pump Stations and 17.5 Miles of new irrigation pipeline at the Oasis In-Lieu Recharge Project - Phase II in Thermal, CA. The pump stations consist of 15 vertical turbine pumps, four surge tanks, four generators up to 1.5 MW, four Motor Control Centers, and four concrete-lined reservoirs. The owner, Coachella Valley Water District, is currently connecting the new users and will continue to expand their water deliveries thanks to the newly installed system.

We began work at the El Sobrante Landfill Mine Reclamation and Cell 13B Excavation project in Corona, CA, in November of 2023. Currently, our Cat 657 scrapers are actively working at the front of the property, more commonly referred to as the "mine site". A separate spread of our Cat 651 scrapers is also operating near the landfill cell side of the site. Here, the scrapers are cutting through roughly 1.4 million cubic yards of earth. To prepare this section for excavation, we blasted it twice in late January and February to break through the hardest portions of the material.

The work on the Badlands Sanitary Landfill, Phase 2 Stage 1 Liner Expansion project was put in motion in July of 2023 in Moreno Valley, CA, and 28 of our Cat 657 scrapers have already hauled over 1,900,000 cubic yards of material on this 98-acre site. Overall, the project involves over 3,000,000 cubic yards of excavation, 1,400,000 square feet of lined slopes and floor liner installation, import of clay, LCRS drainage rock placement, protective cover soil, surface drainage, and erosion control implementation.

Throwback Thursday: beginning in 2014, we constructed three and a half miles of new roadway and widened one and a half miles of existing La Pata Avenue from Stallion Ridge to Ortega Highway, from three to five lanes (La Pata Avenue Gap Closure Project). Our team moved over ten million cubic yards of earth and relocated 865,000 cubic yards of old landfill debris to Prima Deschecha Landfill. We delivered the first two phases of the Orange County Public Works Largest Roadway Project several months early with zero recordable accidents. As a result of the outstanding project quality and performance of everyone involved, the project received numerous industry awards. Once opened, 10,000 vehicles per day use this arterial highway to travel from San Juan Capistrano to San Clemente.

On December 12, 2023, we hit a significant milestone in the construction of the Prima Deshecha Landfill Front Entrance Improvements CMAR project in San Juan Capistrano. We demolished the old gas flare system that has been in operation since the 1970s. Due to the size and complexity of the tower, our team had to break it down into three segments/shafts and then offload them at a different part of the landfill for the final demolition. With the demolition, we have opened the space for the second gas flare station, which we installed on January 3, 2024.
