Sukut and our valued joint venture partners, Dragados USA and Flatiron, constructed the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. The project entailed a full replacement of the 225’ high-zoned earthen dam and partial demolition of the existing dam, originally built in 1925. This Risk Level three project included approximately seven million cubic yards of earthwork with over 650 vertical feet of elevation change and several other components: a new outlet works shaft, tower and ADIT system, outlet works piping, mechanical encasements, deep soil mixing, a 45,000 cubic yard concrete spillway, retaining systems, rock reinforcement, foundation grouting and treatment, electrical, instrumentation, and road work to restore the dam to its original 31 billion gallon capacity.
The project collected various industry awards:
- 2018 Outstanding Environmental and Engineering Geology Award from the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists
- 2019 American Public Works Association Northern California Award, Contractor of the Year
- 2019 American Public Works Association Northern California Award for Structures Projects Over $75 Million Project of the Year
