Sukut’s Pure Water Morena Conveyance South and Middle Pipeline project was recently spotlighted in CalContractor Magazine’s Underground Construction issue. This project is a crucial component of the city’s expansive PureWater program, designed to deliver clean recycled water to the community. Once operational, the new system will provide 30 million gallons per day (MGD) of purified recycled water to San Diego residents and businesses.
Groundbreaking for the project took place in 2002, with an estimated completion date being the end of 2025. Due to its complexity, the project is divided into two segments: The Morena Conveyance South and The Morena Conveyance Middle projects.
The Morena Conveyance South project involves the installation of a 48-inch wastewater force main pipeline spanning approximately 17,404 linear feet, along with a 30-inch welded steel pipe brine centrate/conveyance pipeline covering about 17,840 linear feet.
Meanwhile, the Morena Conveyance Middle project includes a 48-inch wastewater force main pipeline extending approximately 18,300 linear feet and a 30-inch welded steel pipe brine centrate/conveyance pipeline stretching around 18,330 linear feet. Additionally, the project entails the installation of Class II bike lanes with buffers, bicycle loops, sharrows, and signage.
This extensive and crucial pipeline project presents numerous unique logistical challenges that demand expert knowledge of underground construction. With Sukut installing miles of underground pipe at depths ranging from 14 to 20 feet below the roadway surface, residents in impacted communities have concerns about safety and construction impacts. Addressing these concerns while adhering to the construction schedule poses a significant challenge. However, the Sukut team has demonstrated its capability by effectively managing communication, traffic, and the project, significantly minimizing the impact on the surrounding areas.
