At the end of April 2022, Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company and a leading U.S. wholesale energy provider, announced that its battery-based energy storage project at the Tranquillity Solar Facility had reached a fully operational status. Rosendin Electric, who served
as the EPC contractor, selected Sukut Construction (Sukut) to perform the civil scope on the 72-megawatt four-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) project.
Located in Cantua Creek, CA, the project was the first-ever of its kind for Sukut in the emerging utility-scale BESS market and one of the first projects to implement this new technology in the United States. After mobilizing on-site in March 2021, Sukut performed trenching work and installed concrete foundations for battery enclosures, inverters, transformers, and switchboards, completing the construction in April 2022.
Tranquillity and other BESS projects are designed to enhance grid reliability in California. As the alternative energy industry evolves and the customers’ needs continue to increase, BESS projects provide utility companies and the California Independent System Operator (ISO) with the additional flexible reserve to further assimilate recurrent renewable energy into the grid.
“Sukut is excited to be at the forefront of the emerging BESS technology. We see an ever-growing need for additional energy storage and are thrilled to be part of the solution to expand the grid capacity in the United States. The Tranquillity site is one of a growing number of BESS projects
we have been a part of, and we are looking to continue our integration into this expanding market,” said Eric Mauldin, Vice President of the Alternative Energy market at Sukut.
